I haven’t seen the movie, Lee, but I’ve seen a number of stills from it and read the IMDB summary of the plot:
Society-girl thrill seeker Lydia causes the death of motorcycle policeman and is prosecuted by her fiancé Daniel who describes in lurid detail the downfall of Rome. While she’s in prison she reforms and Daniel becomes a wasted alcoholic.

I know a lot of those old silents, at least the dramas, could get pretty dark. So that plotline sounds about par. especially for DeMille. But I am curious how they worked ‘the fall of Rome in lurid detail’ into that mix. It seems apropos of absolutely nothing else that was going on. “Oh I got drunk and side swiped a pedestrian. That is so like the Punic Wars.”
Are these films public domain now? Or is it just the stills?
Anything from 1925 or before is now in the public domain.
As for fall of Rome, I’m guessing that DeMille was equating Daniel getting drunk and hanging out with a lot of women with Roman orgies. And orgies always lead to disaster–at least in a DeMille film!
It’s a whole swimming hole of babes. I’d swim to the bottom and never come up.

I assume this still is from a scene where Daniel is a wasted alcoholic and indulging in other vices—such as multiple women!
