Ultra Maniac is a five-volume graphic novel series
by Wataru Yoshizumi, the creator of Marmalade Boy. After
it was translated from Japanese, Viz Media hired me
to spruce up the dialog and throw in bits of silliness.
It's a bit like writing Last Kiss in that I'm coming
up with new dialog for pre-existing art. The big difference
is that I've also got a pre-existing storyline to follow
and I've got to be respectful of the original creator's
intentions.
Ultra Maniac is about two middle school girls--the
ultra popular Ayu Tateishi and her friend, Nina Sakura--an
inept witch. Nina¹s determined to improve Ayu's
love life, but every time Nina casts a spell something
goes wrong and poor Ayu is often worse off than ever.

Ultra Maniac Volume One
In the first book, Ayu learns that Nina¹s
secretly a witch from another world. Back
on her home planet, Nina was "flunking
magic." So she came to Earth to take
a break and practice her sorcery. Nina quickly
discovers that Ayu is smitten with the school's
best baseball player Tetsushi Kaji. And,
gosh, wouldn't it be swell if Nina
could cast a spell or two to help her friend
find true love? Oh, if only things were
that simple! 184 pages of magic gone hilariously
wrong.
