This year, I’m skipping the Bumbershoot music and art festival here in Seattle. No booth for me. And what a great decision that turned out to be!
My daughter Caitie Lustig and my brand-new son-in-law Chris Gunderson are moving to California on Monday. And I wouldn’t be able to hang out with them these last few days if I was at Bumbershoot.

(Me taking Caitie down the “aisle” at her wedding to the theme from Star Wars. No, it wasn’t a traditional wedding.)
Caitie is going to be a grad student at the University of California Irvine. She’s going to get her masters and then her doctorate in Computer Science.

(Caitie Lustig & Chris Gunderson get hitched July 2, 2009.)
There will be other Bumbershoots. But this is the only weekend I’ve got before my daughter leaves town. No contest. I’m staying home.
For a moment there I thought you were also doing the wedding services! HA. Love the photos.
congrats John, hey, is that a comic book your reading?
That ain’t me in the second photo. That’s the person who’s officiating at the wedding and actually hitching Caitie and Chris up!
Wow! How did you manage to get your clone ordained in time for the services?
And speaking of Bumbershoot, what is that black thing strapped on Caitie’s back?
A bumperchute?
Caitie’s bridal gown came with a corset. Since she’s pretty lean to begin with, I assume this was a fashion statement. In any event, she could barely sit down and didn’t eat anything until she changed out of the dress. Wheh!
John! Our belated congrats to your wonderful family! That is wonderful news about your daughter! Good call, staying back to hang with the fam!
Thanks, Luke! Family first. Comics second. Work third!
Another belated congrats to you and your family, John!
My wife went ga-ga over your daughter’s dress and we both were tickled to see that Kent was the minister – he officiated our wedding ceremony too!
